Film Tips

Rule of Thirds- If you have an image and break it up into thirds horizontally it helps to put the interesting objects on the lines or intersects of those lines.
This is important because these are the most drawn to sections of a picture or video.

180 Degree Rule- if you have two objects and an imaginary line in-between the two objects you need to stay 180 degrees on either side of the objects, not both.

Interview Tips:

  • Do your homework: know who you're talking to and ask questions that are relevant and do a pre interview so you know their answers so you know what questions to avoid.
  • Don't try to wing it, have your questions written down because this will help you keep your interview going smooth.
  • Questions that can be answered yes or no are not good for videos. You want them to answer with some substance.
  • You want your subject to look and talk to you and not talk to the camera. This will be awkward for the viewer.
How to Set up a 3 Light Shot:
  • Key Light is the brightest light, its the most important light. You want this to be high and off to the left.
  • Fill light is to the other side of the Key light because it gives a little bit of light to the shadowed side.
  • Back light is the last light and it is behind the subject and we do this because it pushes your subject off the back wall a little bit and put them in space.
  • Background light is optional but you can put a light behind your subject to push them off the background even more and it kind of gives them a halo around them.
Nose Room- you want to leave more room in front of a persons nose than not when you are shooting.

Head Room- Your subject doesn't need space above there head. Instead put the eyes 1/3 up the screen(rule of thirds).

Background- take just as much time coming up with your background for the interview as you would the actually script of the interview.

Mis-en-scene- This is what is actually in the frame when you are filming.

Hands- Don't let your subject break the frame with their hands while they are talking about the important stuff.
