Dire Straits

The song I was assigned was Money For Nothing by Dire Straits. The song basically goes on to say that the musicians that you see on MTV were getting paid to do nothing and that their work was easy. Mark Knopfler, lead singer, said that the lyrics were inspired by a deliveryman at an appliance store. When at the store he over heard the man say that the artists "aint working," and that they were "getting chicks for free". The voice at the beginning of the song is Sting and he wrote that line "I wan't my MTV," he is credited for cowriting this song just for that line.

This line in the song was really controversial and it made people think that Knopfler was homophobic so when preforming the song live he would replace the work "faggot" with "queen".
The music video for this song was also very important because it uses computer generated animation and it was one of the first music videos to do so. It also made history because it was the fist music video to be played on MTV Europe.
